Overview - Rationale for the Life-Skills Literacy Project
How it got started.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".
Initially, this project grew out of a need to help address the problem of violence in society. Upon further in depth research and investigation, we discovered and believe that the root cause of the majority of violence “symptoms” typically stem from underlying personal development and human potential issues. We also found that a large part of the problem is due to the lack of “readily available” practical and applied (experiential) information and education in the defined core learning areas.
This project is our idea of a pro-active, preventative solution.
It is the Life-Skills Literacy Projects’ intention to make this crucial and practical life changing information freely available over the Internet using the concept of “Pay It Forward”. Through the “Life-Skills Literacy Project”, we are addressing what we believe to be some of the major causes and roots of the problem of violence in society.
Current research and studies are conclusive that the areas of Life-Skills education and training programs that we have targeted are some of the most important core competencies to understand, practice and integrate into an individuals life that will ultimately help determine success, balance, peace, happiness and fulfillment.
Our research has also led us the conclusion that most of society is "illiterate" and ignorant of these core competencies. Not ignorant in a bad way, but ignorant in an innocent way in that most of us have simply not been exposed or had “easy access” to these skills and tools in the environment of our family or educational systems.
To take this a step further, we find that the majority of funding in back end social support focuses in the majority of cases on treating the symptoms / effects but not the causes. By delivering this type of educational content for free, on demand and easily available, we are essentially dropping a pebble in a pond that will generate ripples that will make a positive impact throughout society. We believe this will ultimately save hundreds of millions of dollars in back end social support, legal and medical services. Not just by providing information that entertains or informs, but experiential knowledge and education that offers a measurable long term benefit to society. We will be delivering tools and services for personal change to users that will allow them to be more empowered, effective and functional contributing members of society.
We believe one of the main strengths of the Internet is its capacity for affordable on demand delivery of multimedia educational content for a fraction of the cost of previous distribution models and methodologies. This project focuses on delivering positive, life empowering content via existing and emerging broadband Internet technologies via the life skills literacy web site. The Life-Skills Literacy Project will provide easy on demand access to life skills, personal growth, social, employability, consumer and professional skills, self-improvement training and counseling to individuals and groups via the Internet at no charge to the recipient.
What will the project's broader outcomes and impacts be?
- A better educated healthier, wealthier society.
What are the implications of the project for the education and training sector?
-An on demand multimedia distribution model that targets all learning styles and offers a centralized point for personal growth educational content distribution. -Higher profile for educators on a worldwide scope as participants in this project. -Further feedback from users, companies and universities will allow further expansion and delivery of critical life and business skill requirements.
How will the results from the project, if successful, be sustainable?
-Long term sustainability will be achieved through national and local corporate goodwill advertising and sponsorship at several levels. -Certified business courses can be distributed on a subscription basis.
How are the results of the project to be evaluated?
-Reduction of reliance on social services, Medical and Legal Systems. -Successful completion of free courses by participants. -Course results can be assessed by online testing and logging applications. -For assessing "user hours" Internet statistics will log the amount of time users spend accessing content.
What are the broad structural issues that will be addressed through the project?
-Reduction of structural impediments in the delivery of education and training material. -Easier access to relevant life success, personal development and business success strategies. -Easier access for more people through existing distribution architecture
We will partner with:
-Existing content providers in the medical, social services, personal development, human potential and spiritual fields. -Existing Internet delivery services (ISP’s, Telcos, Cable Networks) to promote, mirror and distribute content at local, and national levels. -Marketing services to promote the service to sponsors and the public.
How will we do it? We recognize that a key element in getting people to absorb and utilize this material involves creating some kind of motivational factor. To address this crucial issue, we will be implementing a “Life-Skills Literacy Accreditation Program” to create a win/win scenario for everyone involved in the project, for participants, sponsors, partners and content providers.
